Benefits of Yoga for Eyes

About 70 percent of adults suffer from eye strain at some point. In most cases, the cause of digital eye strain is the bright screens of our computers, as many people have jobs that require staring at a screen for hours a day.

A study involving office workers in India indicated that daily yoga can significantly reduce the blurred vision, pain, and dryness often experienced by computer users. In the study, half of the participants practiced yoga for one hour per day, five days per week while the other half followed their routine. The yoga program consisted of 15 minutes of yoga asanas (poses), 10 minutes of regular yogic breathing, 10 minutes of couples exercises, 10 minutes of eye yoga exercises and 15 minutes of guided relaxation.

The yoga group experienced significantly less eye strain after their weeks of yoga. The control group actually reported more eye strain than they had experienced at the start of the study.

What is Eye Yoga?

Eye yoga refers to specific exercises that engage all the eye muscles that support eye movement. These exercises help improve flexibility in these muscles and help you focus better.

Common eye yoga exercises include:

Repeatedly look up and down, then left and right  Close your eyes for several seconds to add moisture to your eyelids، Now rub your palms and warm them and then place your hands on your closed eyes،Picking an object and staring at it without blinking. Focus and unfocused your eyes during this exercise.

These exercises are done in the morning, several times throughout the day and at night before going to bed. Since they only involve the eyes, they can be performed wherever you are when you have time for them. Do these exercises before you get out of bed, during your morning commute if you use public transport or at your desk whenever you need a break.

Not all yoga poses are for everyone.

Although yoga has many health benefits, some yoga poses can cause problems for people with glaucoma. A number of inverted positions have been shown to increase intraocular pressure.

In an observational study of 10 people with glaucoma, eye pressure increased within a minute of holding each pose. After sitting for two minutes it returned to normal. Prolonged intraocular pressure can damage the nerves.

Inverted yoga positions that can cause injury include:

Downward dog

Hull pose

Standard forward bend pose .Poses that require headstands or putting your legs up a wall.
